Indications

  • Treatment of acute otitis media caused by susceptible microorganisms
  • Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by susceptible microorganisms
  • Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis caused by susceptible microorganisms
  • Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia caused by susceptible microorganisms
  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by susceptible microorganisms
  • Treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
  • Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
  • Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by susceptible microorganisms
  • Treatment of rectal gonococcal infections in women caused by susceptible microorganisms

Pharmacology

  • Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
  • Stable to beta-lactamases
  • Activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
  • Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
  • Approximately 29 to 33% excreted unchanged in the urine in 12 hours

Dosage & Administration

  • Specific dosage for adults and adolescents
  • Specific dosage for infants and pediatric patients
  • Dosing intervals adjustment for patients with renal dysfunction
  • No dose adjustment necessary for patients with liver cirrhosis

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration with antacids reduces peak plasma level and extent of absorption
  • Renal excretion inhibition by probenecid resulting in increased AUC
  • Close monitoring of renal function when administered with nephrotoxic drugs

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not teratogenic or embryocidal in animal trials
  • No adequate and well-controlled study in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Total daily dose reduction in patients with reduced urinary output
  • Caution in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Repeated evaluation of the patient’s condition is essential
