Pharmacology

  • 3rd generation cephalosporin
  • Good stability to beta lactamases
  • Activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria
  • Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
  • 29-33% excretion unchanged in urine in 12 hours

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage for various infections
  • Pediatric dosage for various infections
  • Dosing adjustment for severe renal impairment
  • No dose adjustment necessary in liver cirrhosis

Interaction

  • Reduction in peak plasma level with antacids
  • Reduction in absorption with H 2 blockers
  • Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid
  • Close monitoring of renal function with nephrotoxic drugs

  • Allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Precautions & Warnings

  • Dose reduction in transient or persistent reduction in urinary output
  • Caution with concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Repeated evaluation of patient's condition
