Indications

  • Treatment of acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae
  • Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae or H. influenza
  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by S. pneumoniae
  • Treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by E. coli
  • Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Rectal gonococcal infections in women due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Pharmacology

  • Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
  • Good stability to beta lactamases
  • Activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage for pharyngitis/tonsillitis: 100 mg 12 hourly, 5 to 10 days
  • Adult dosage for acute maxillary sinusitis: 200 mg 12 hourly, 10 days
  • Adult dosage for community-acquired pneumonia: 200 mg 12 hourly, 14 days
  • Adult dosage for acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis: 200 mg 12 hourly, 10 days
  • Adult dosage for skin and skin structure: 400 mg 12 hourly, 7 to 14 days
  • Adult dosage for uncomplicated urinary tract infection: 100 mg 12 hourly, 7 days
  • Adult dosage for uncomplicated gonorrhea: single dose of 200 mg
  • Pediatric dosage for acute otitis media: 5 mg/kg body weight 12 hourly, 5 days
  • Pediatric dosage for pharyngitis /tonsillitis: 5 mg/kg body weight 12 hourly, 5 to 10 days
  • Pediatric dosage for acute maxillary sinusitis: 5 mg/kg body weight 12 hourly, 10 days

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration of high doses of antacids reduces peak plasma level
  • Renal excretion of cefpodoxime was inhibited by probenecid
  • Close monitoring of renal function advised when administered with nephrotoxic drugs

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to Cefpodoxime or to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled study of Cefpodoxime Proxetil use in pregnant woman
  • Excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Reduce total daily dose in patients with renal insufficiency
  • Administer with caution to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms

Reconstitution

  • Add 30 ml of cooled boil water to the dry mixture for 50 ml suspension
