Indications
- Treatment of acute otitis media caused by various microorganisms
- Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by specific bacteria
- Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis caused by certain bacterial strains
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia caused by specific bacteria
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by certain bacteria

Pharmacology
- Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
- Good stability to beta lactamases
- Activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria
- Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
- Approximately 29 to 33% excreted unchanged in urine in 12 hours
- High stability in presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
- Effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Active against S. aureus, S. saprophyticus, S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, N. gonorrhoeae, P. mirabilis, etc.
Dosage & Administration
- Specific dosages for adults, adolescents, infants, and pediatric patients
- Different dosing intervals for patients with renal dysfunction
- No dosage adjustment needed for patients with liver cirrhosis
Interaction
- Concomitant administration with antacids or H 2 blockers
- Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid
- Close monitoring advised when administered with nephrotoxic drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

- Excreted in human milk

- Dosage reduction in patients with reduced urinary output due to renal insufficiency
- Caution advised when administered with potent diuretics
- Potential for overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms with prolonged use
