Indications

  • Treatment of acute otitis media caused by various microorganisms
  • Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by specific bacteria
  • Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis caused by certain bacterial strains
  • Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia caused by specific bacteria
  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by certain bacteria
  • Treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by specific bacteria
  • Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria
  • Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea
  • Treatment of rectal gonococcal infections in women
  • Treatment of various infections caused by susceptible microorganisms

Pharmacology

  • Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
  • Good stability to beta lactamases
  • Activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria
  • Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
  • Approximately 29 to 33% excreted unchanged in urine in 12 hours
  • High stability in presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Active against S. aureus, S. saprophyticus, S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, N. gonorrhoeae, P. mirabilis, etc.

Dosage & Administration

  • Specific dosages for adults, adolescents, infants, and pediatric patients
  • Different dosing intervals for patients with renal dysfunction
  • No dosage adjustment needed for patients with liver cirrhosis

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration with antacids or H 2 blockers
  • Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid
  • Close monitoring advised when administered with nephrotoxic drugs

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

  • Dosage reduction in patients with reduced urinary output due to renal insufficiency
  • Caution advised when administered with potent diuretics
  • Potential for overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms with prolonged use
