Indicated for

  • Acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenza, Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae or H. influenza
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, or M. catarrhalis
  • Skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Rectal gonococcal infections in women due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Pharmacology

  • Cefpodoxime is an oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
  • Good stability to beta lactamases
  • Activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria
  • Approximately 29 to 33% excreted unchanged in the urine in 12 hours
  • More effective against gram-positive bacteria than other 3rd generation oral cephalosporins

Dosage and administration

  • Adults and Adolescents (13 years and older): Various dosage regimens for different infections
  • Infants and Pediatric Patients (2 months to 12 years): Various dosage regimens for different infections
  • Patients with renal dysfunction: Dosing interval adjustment required
  • Patients with liver cirrhosis: No dose adjustment necessary

  • Administer with caution to patients receiving potent diuretics
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
