Indications
- Treatment of acute otitis media caused by specific microorganisms
- Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by specific microorganisms
- Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis caused by specific microorganisms
- Treatment of community acquired pneumonia caused by specific microorganisms
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by specific microorganisms

Pharmacology
- Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
- Good stability to beta lactamases
- Activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
- Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
- Approximately 29-33% excretion unchanged in urine in 12 hours
- Effective against wide range of gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria
Dosage and administration
- Specific dosages for different infections in adults, adolescents, infants, and pediatric patients
- Dosing interval adjustment for patients with severe renal impairment
- No dose adjustment necessary for patients with liver cirrhosis
Interaction
- Interaction with antacids leading to reduced peak plasma levels and absorption
- Renal excretion inhibition by probenecid leading to increased AUC
- Close monitoring of renal function advised when administered with nephrotoxic drugs
Contraindications
- Not to be used by patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics
Side effects
- Side effects including diarrhea, nausea, fungal infections, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dizziness, cough, etc.
- Higher incidence of fungal skin rash in children
Pregnancy and lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled study in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, decision should be made whether to discontinue breast-feeding or the drug
Precautions and warnings
- Reduction of total daily dose in patients with reduced urinary output or renal insufficiency
- Use with caution in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Risk of overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms with prolonged use
