Dosage and Administration
Amlodipine and Atenolol 5/25 mg tablet should be taken once daily. Dosage may be increased to two tablets daily as advised by physicians, and should be individualized.
Indications
- Treatment of essential hypertension
- Treatment of angina pectoris and hypertension as co-existing diseases
- Post myocardial infarction treatment
- Refractory angina pectoris treatment when nitrate therapy has failed
Pharmacology
- Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist
- Amlodipine acts as a peripheral vasodilator
- Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker
- Atenolol causes a reduction in blood pressure by lowering cardiac output and sympathetic outflow from the CNS
Interaction
- Disopyramide: Atenolol reduces the clearance of disopyramide by 20%
- Ampicillin at doses of 1 gm and above may reduce Atenolol levels
- Oral antidiabetics and insulin: Beta-blockers may decrease tissue sensitivity to insulin and inhibit insulin secretion
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to either component
- Sinus bradycardia
- Second and higher degrees of heart block
- Cardiogenic shock
- Hypotension
- Congestive heart failure
- Poor left ventricular function

- Edema
- Nausea
- Drowsiness
- Anxiety
- Depression
Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if expected benefit outweighs potential fetal risk. Not recommended for nursing mothers.
Precautions and Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with airway obstruction
- Caution in patients with renal impairment especially if creatinine clearance is less than 30 ml/min
- Caution in patients with severe liver damage
- Warn patients against stopping the drug suddenly; Any discontinuation should be gradual and under observation
Overdose Effects
- Hypotension
- Congestive cardiac failure
- Unabsorbed drugs may be removed by gastric lavage or administration of activated charcoal
- Symptomatic treatment is suggested
