Pharmacology
Ceftazidime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic for parenteral administration, bactericidal in action, inhibits cell-wall synthesis, susceptible to a wide range of gram-negative organisms, stable to clinically important beta-lactamases, active against gram-positive organisms.
Dosage
- Usual adult dosage is 1 gram intravenously or intramuscularly every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage and route determined by susceptibility of causative organisms, severity of infection, patient's condition, and renal function
- Dosage varies for adults, elderly, cystic fibrosis patients, infants, children, neonates
Administration
Can be given intravenously or by deep IM injection, should be reconstituted with sterile water for injection
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data for pregnancy, use only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk in low concentrations, safety in nursing infants not established
Precautions & Warnings
- Dosage should be reduced in renal insufficiency
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Adjusted dosage for impaired renal function
- Use in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
- No adjustment in dosage for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
Reactions include seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma, supportive treatment is necessary.
