Description
- Ceftazim Injection is indicated for the treatment of patients with infections caused by susceptible strains of various organisms in different diseases such as Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Skin and Skin Structure Infections, Urinary Tract Infections, Bacterial Septicemia, Bone and Joint Infections, Gynecologic Infections, Intraabdominal Infections, Central Nervous System Infections.

Usual Adult Dosage
- 1 gram administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 8 to 12 hours
Dosage Range for Adults
- 1 to 6 gm per day 8 or 12 hourly (IM/IV)
Dosage for Urinary Tract Infections
- 500 mg or 1 gm 12 hourly
Dosage for Severe Infections
- 2 gm 8 or 12 hourly
Dosage for Cystic Fibrosis
- 100 to 150 mg/kg/day as three divided doses for fibrocystic adults with normal renal function
Dosage for Infants and Children
- 30 to 100 mg/kg/day for children aged over two months
Dosage for Neonates and Children up to 2 months of age
- 25 to 60 mg/kg/day as two divided doses

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazim or cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, fever
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, paresthesia
Pregnancy
- Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
Lactation
- Decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother
Precautions
- Reduce total daily dosage in patients with renal insufficiency
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis

Reconstitution
- Amount of WFI to be added: 250 mg IM in 1.5 ml, 250 mg IV in 5 ml, 500 mg IM in 1.5 ml, 500 mg IV in 5 ml, 1 g IM in 3 ml, 1 g IV in 10 ml
Pharmacology
- Ceftazidime is bactericidal and inhibits enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
- Active against gram-negative and gram-positive organisms
- Stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases
Overdose Effects
- Seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, coma in patients with renal failure
