Description

  • Ceftazidime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic for treating various infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Indications

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal action
  • Inhibition of cell-wall synthesis
  • Susceptibility to gram-negative organisms
  • Activity against gram-positive organisms
  • Stability to beta-lactamases

Dosage

  • 1 gram dosage for adults every 8 to 12 hours
  • Dosage determination based on susceptibility, infection severity, and patient condition and renal function

Administration

  • Intravenous or deep IM injection
  • Reconstitution with Sterile Water for Injection

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Local reactions following IV injection
  • Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
  • Pruritus, rash, fever, angioedema, anaphylaxis
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain

  • Excretion in human milk in low concentrations

Precautions & Warnings

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage reduction in renal insufficiency
  • Use in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
  • No adjustment in dosage for patients with hepatic dysfunction
