Description
- Ceftazidime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic for treating various infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action
- Inhibition of cell-wall synthesis
- Susceptibility to gram-negative organisms
- Activity against gram-positive organisms
- Stability to beta-lactamases
Dosage
- 1 gram dosage for adults every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage determination based on susceptibility, infection severity, and patient condition and renal function
Administration
- Intravenous or deep IM injection
- Reconstitution with Sterile Water for Injection
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Pruritus, rash, fever, angioedema, anaphylaxis
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Central nervous system reactions including headache, dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excretion in human milk in low concentrations
- Consideration of drug importance to the mother in decision-making
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with renal insufficiency
- Prescription caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction in renal insufficiency
- Use in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- No adjustment in dosage for patients with hepatic dysfunction
