Dosage

  • Usual adult dosage is 1 gram
  • Dosage range for adults is 1 to 6 gm per day
  • Usual dosage range for children aged over two months is 30 to 100 mg/kg/day
  • Dosage for neonates and children up to 2 months of age is 25 to 60 mg/kg/day

Administration

  • Can be given intravenously or by deep IM injection
  • Intra-arterial administration should be avoided

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Common side-effects include local reactions following IV injection
  • Common side-effects include allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
  • Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, and fever
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain

  • Total daily dosage should be reduced in patients with renal insufficiency
  • Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended dosage reduction in patients with impaired renal function
  • Usable in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
  • No adjustment in dosage required for patients with hepatic dysfunction

Overdose Effects

  • Overdosage may lead to seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma
