Dosage
- Usual adult dosage is 1 gram
- Dosage range for adults is 1 to 6 gm per day
- Usual dosage range for children aged over two months is 30 to 100 mg/kg/day
- Dosage for neonates and children up to 2 months of age is 25 to 60 mg/kg/day
Administration
- Can be given intravenously or by deep IM injection
- Intra-arterial administration should be avoided
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Common side-effects include local reactions following IV injection
- Common side-effects include allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, and fever
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, and paresthesia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety during pregnancy not established, should be used if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk in low concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Total daily dosage should be reduced in patients with renal insufficiency
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended dosage reduction in patients with impaired renal function
- Usable in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- No adjustment in dosage required for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Overdosage may lead to seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma
