Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal action
  • Inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
  • Activity against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms

Dosage

  • Usual adult dosage of 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours
  • Dosage determined by severity of infection and renal function
  • Dosage range for adults is 1 to 6 gm per day
  • Dosage range for children aged over two months is 30 to 100 mg/kg/day

Administration

  • Intravenous or deep IM injection
  • Reconstitution with Sterile Water for Injection
  • Avoidance of intra-arterial administration

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Local reactions following IV injection
  • Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
  • Hypersensitivity reactions, pruritus, rash, fever
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • Central nervous system reactions, headache, dizziness, paresthesia

  • Caution in use during pregnancy
  • Excretion in human milk in low concentrations

  • Reduced dosage for patients with renal insufficiency
  • Caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease

  • Dosage reduction in renal insufficiency
  • Use in peritoneal dialysis
  • No adjustment in dosage for hepatic dysfunction
