Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic
  • Broad-spectrum
  • Bactericidal in action
  • Inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
  • Susceptible to gram-negative organisms
  • Active against gram-positive organisms
  • Stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases

Dosage

  • Usual adult dosage is 1 gram administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 8 to 12 hours
  • Dosage and route determined by susceptibility of causative organisms
  • Dosage varies based on severity of infection, patient's condition, and renal function

Administration

  • Can be given intravenously or by deep IM injection
  • Avoid intra-arterial administration
  • Should be reconstituted with supplied Sterile Water for Injection

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Local reactions following IV injection
  • Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
  • Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, and fever
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
  • Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, and paresthesia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excretion in human milk in low concentrations

Precautions & Warnings

  • Total daily dosage should be reduced in patients with renal insufficiency
  • Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage adjustment for patients with impaired renal function
  • Usage in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
  • No dosage adjustment required for patients with hepatic dysfunction

Overdose Effects

  • Overdosage reactions included seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma

Therapeutic Class

  • Specific amount of Sterile Water for Injection required for reconstitution based on dosage and administration type

Storage Conditions

  • Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture
