Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic
- Broad-spectrum
- Bactericidal in action
- Inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
- Susceptible to gram-negative organisms
- Active against gram-positive organisms
- Stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases
Dosage
- Usual adult dosage is 1 gram administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage and route determined by susceptibility of causative organisms
- Dosage varies based on severity of infection, patient's condition, and renal function
Administration
- Can be given intravenously or by deep IM injection
- Avoid intra-arterial administration
- Should be reconstituted with supplied Sterile Water for Injection
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, and fever
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, and paresthesia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk in low concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Total daily dosage should be reduced in patients with renal insufficiency
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustment for patients with impaired renal function
- Usage in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- No dosage adjustment required for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Overdosage reactions included seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma
