Indications
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of skin and skin structure infections

Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic beta-lactam antibiotic
- Bactericidal action
- Inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
- Susceptible to a wide range of gram-negative organisms
- Stability to most clinically important beta-lactamases
Dosage
- Usual adult dosage is 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage depends on susceptibility of causative organisms
- Dosage determined by severity of infection and patient's renal function
- Dosage range for adults is 1 to 6 gm per day
- Specific dosages for urinary tract infections and severe infections
- Reduced clearance in acutely ill elderly patients
- Usual dosage range for children aged over two months
Administration
- Administered intravenously or by deep IM injection
- Reconstituted with supplied Sterile Water for Injection
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group antibiotics
Side Effects
- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, and fever
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
- Central nervous system reactions like headache and dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk in low concentrations
- Safety in nursing infants not established
Precautions & Warnings
- Dosage reduction in patients with renal insufficiency
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction in patients with impaired renal function
- Use in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- No adjustment in dosage required for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Reactions including seizure activity and coma
- Patients should be given supportive treatment
