Pharmacology
- Bactericidal
- Broad-spectrum
- Beta-lactam antibiotic
- Inhibition of cell-wall synthesis
- Stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases
Dosage
- Usual adult dosage 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage determined by susceptibility of causative organisms
- Dosage depending upon severity, sensitivity & type of infections and the age, weight & renal function of the patient
- Different dosage for urinary tract infections, severe infections, elderly, cystic fibrosis, infants and children, neonates and children up to 2 months of age
Administration
- Intravenous or deep IM injection
- Reconstitution with Sterile Water for Injection
- Intra-arterial administration should be avoided
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic reactions
- Gastrointestinal symptoms
- Central nervous system reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk in low concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced dosage for patients with renal insufficiency
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction in impaired renal function
- Usage in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- No dosage adjustment required for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Occurred in patients with renal failure
- Reactions including seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma
Reconstitution
- Amount of WFI to be added for IM and IV administration
Storage Conditions
- Store below 25°C
- Protected from light and moisture
- Reconstituted solutions stable for up to 24 h if stored between 2°C-8°C
