Indications

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal Action
- Inhibition of Cell-wall Synthesis
- Broad-spectrum Antibiotic
- Susceptibility to Gram-negative and gram-positive organisms
Dosage
- Usual Adult Dosage: 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage determination based on susceptibility of causative organisms, severity of infection, and patient's renal function
- Range of dosage for adults: 1 to 6 gm per day
- Reduced dosage for acutely ill elderly patients, especially those over 80 years of age
- High doses for fibrocystic adults with pseudomonal lung infections
- Usual dosage range for children aged over two months: 30 to 100 mg/kg/day
Administration
- Can be administered intravenously or by deep IM injection
- Reconstitution required with supplied Sterile Water for Injection
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions: pruritus, rash, fever, angioedema, anaphylaxis
- Gastrointestinal symptoms: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Central nervous system reactions: headache, dizziness, paresthesia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk in low concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Total daily dosage reduction in renal insufficiency patients
- Prescription caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction in patients with impaired renal function
- Incorporation into dialysis fluid in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
- No dosage adjustment required for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Occurrence in patients with renal failure
- Reactions including seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma
- Supportive treatment for patients receiving acute overdosage
Therapeutic Class

Reconstitution
- Specific amounts of WFI to be added for intramuscular and intravenous administration

- Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture
- Reconstituted solutions stable for up to 24 hours if stored between 2°C-8°C
