Indications

  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of skin and skin structure infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of bacterial septicemia
  • Treatment of bone and joint infections
  • Treatment of gynecologic infections
  • Treatment of intraabdominal infections
  • Treatment of central nervous system infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic
  • Broad-spectrum
  • Bactericidal action
  • Inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
  • Susceptible to a wide range of gram-negative organisms
  • Active against gram-positive organisms
  • Highly stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases

Dosage

  • Usual adult dosage: 1 gram every 8-12 hours
  • Dosage determined by susceptibility of causative organisms
  • Usable by parenteral route
  • Usual dosage range for adults: 1 to 6 gm per day
  • Different dosage for urinary tract and severe infections
  • Dosage for elderly patients
  • Dosage for infants and children

Administration

  • Can be given intravenously or by deep IM injection
  • Avoid intra-arterial administration
  • Reconstitute with Sterile Water for Injection for IV/IM administration

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Local reactions following IV injection
  • Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
  • Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, and fever
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
  • Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, and paresthesia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excreted in low concentrations in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Reduce dosage for patients with renal insufficiency
  • Prescribe with caution for individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease

Use in Special Populations

  • Adjust dosage for patients with impaired renal function
  • Usable in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
  • No adjustment in dosage for patients with hepatic dysfunction

Overdose Effects

  • Overdosage reactions include seizure activity, encephalopathy, and coma
  • Patients should be observed and given supportive treatment

Therapeutic Class

  • Third generation Cephalosporins

Reconstitution

  • Amount of WFI to be added for IM and IV administration

Storage Conditions

  • Store below 25°C
  • Protect from light and moisture
  • Reconstituted solutions are stable for up to 24 hours if stored between 2°C-8°C
