Pharmacology
Ceftazidime is a semisynthetic, broad-spectrum, beta-lactam antibiotic for parenteral administration. It is bactericidal in action and inhibits enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis.
Dosage
- Usual adult dosage is 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours intravenously or intramuscularly
- Dosage and route determined by susceptibility of causative organisms, infection severity, and renal function
- Different dosages for urinary tract infections, severe infections, elderly, cystic fibrosis, infants, children, and neonates
Administration
Ceftazidime may be given intravenously or by deep intramuscular injection
Contraindications
Ceftazidime is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or the cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Common side effects include local reactions following IV injection, allergic reactions, gastrointestinal symptoms, and central nervous system reactions
- Rare instances of angioedema and anaphylaxis have been reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excreted in low concentrations in human milk
- Safety in nursing infants not established
Precautions & Warnings
Dosage should be reduced in patients with renal insufficiency. Caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction in renal impairment
- Use in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
- No dosage adjustment needed for hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
Overdose may result in seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma. Supportive treatment required

Storage Conditions
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Reconstituted solutions are stable for up to 24 hours when stored between 2°C-8°C
