Indications

Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic
- Bactericidal action
- Inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
- Susceptible to gram-negative organisms
- Active against gram-positive organisms
- Stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases
Dosage
- Usual adult dosage of 1 gram administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage and route determined by susceptibility of causative organisms and severity of infection
- Dosage depends on age, weight, and renal function of the patient
- Different dosages for urinary tract infections, severe infections, elderly, cystic fibrosis, infants, and children
Administration
- Can be given intravenously or by deep intramuscular injection
- Reconstituted with supplied Sterile Water for Injection
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, and fever
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, and paresthesia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk in low concentrations
- Decision making for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Total daily dosage should be reduced in patients with renal insufficiency
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- Usage in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
- No adjustment in dosage for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Overdose reactions in patients with renal failure
- Reactions include seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma
- Careful observation and supportive treatment for patients with acute overdosage
