Indications

  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Skin and Skin Structure Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Bacterial Septicemia
  • Treatment of Bone and Joint Infections
  • Treatment of Gynecologic Infections
  • Treatment of Intraabdominal Infections
  • Treatment of Central Nervous System Infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic
  • Bactericidal action
  • Inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
  • Susceptible to gram-negative organisms
  • Active against gram-positive organisms
  • Stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases

Dosage

  • Usual adult dosage of 1 gram administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 8 to 12 hours
  • Dosage and route determined by susceptibility of causative organisms and severity of infection
  • Dosage depends on age, weight, and renal function of the patient
  • Different dosages for urinary tract infections, severe infections, elderly, cystic fibrosis, infants, and children

Administration

  • Can be given intravenously or by deep intramuscular injection
  • Reconstituted with supplied Sterile Water for Injection

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Local reactions following IV injection
  • Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
  • Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, and fever
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
  • Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, and paresthesia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in human milk in low concentrations
  • Decision making for nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Total daily dosage should be reduced in patients with renal insufficiency
  • Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
  • Usage in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
  • No adjustment in dosage for patients with hepatic dysfunction

Overdose Effects

  • Overdose reactions in patients with renal failure
  • Reactions include seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, and coma
  • Careful observation and supportive treatment for patients with acute overdosage

Therapeutic Class

Reconstitution

  • Amount of WFI to be added for administration

Storage Conditions

  • Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture
  • Reconstituted solutions are stable for up to 24 hours if stored between 2°C-8°C
