Description

  • Semisynthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic
  • Indicated for various infections such as lower respiratory tract infections, skin and skin structure infections, urinary tract infections, bacterial septicemia, bone and joint infections, gynecologic infections, intraabdominal infections, and central nervous system infections

Dosage Range

  • 1 to 6 gm per day for adults
  • 30 to 100 mg/kg/day for children
  • 25 to 60 mg/kg/day for neonates and children up to 2 months of age

  • Intravenous
  • Intramuscular

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Consideration for discontinuing nursing while using the drug

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis

Special Populations

  • Dosage reduction in patients with impaired renal function
  • Use in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
  • No adjustment in dosage required for patients with hepatic dysfunction

Reconstitution

  • Amount of WFI to be added for IM and IV administration

Storage Conditions

  • Store below 25°C
  • Protected from light and moisture
  • Reconstituted solutions are stable for up to 24 hours if stored between 2°C-8°C

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal action by inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
  • Susceptible to a wide range of gram-negative organisms

Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of designated organisms for various diseases

Usual Adult Dosage

  • 1 gram administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 8 to 12 hours

Elderly Dosage

  • Daily dosage should not exceed 3 gm, especially in those over 80 years of age

Prophylactic Use

  • 1 gm at the induction of anesthesia for prostatic surgery

Impaired Renal Function

  • Recommended dosage reduction in patients with glomerular filtration rate <50 mL/min

Impaired Hepatic Function

  • No adjustment in dosage required for patients with hepatic dysfunction

Overdose Effects

  • Seizure activity
  • Encephalopathy
  • Coma
