Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life (6-9 hours)
- High degree of protein binding (95%)
- Not metabolized in the body
- Excreted unchanged in urine and bile
Dosage
- Usual adult dose: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Infants and children dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum infants and children dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting)
- Cutaneous reactions (rash, pruritus, urticaria)
- Hematologic reactions (eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia)
- Hepatic reactions (elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia)
- CNS reactions (nervousness, confusion, headache)
- Local phlebitis

- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Potential for anaphylactic shock
- Gallbladder sludge (reversible on discontinuation)
- Regular blood checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not for premature and newborn neonates (up to 28 days of age)
