Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High degree of stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- 40-65% excreted unchanged in the urine
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- 1-2 gm for adults by intravenous or intramuscular administration
- 250 mg for uncomplicated gonococcal infections
- 1 g for surgical prophylaxis
- 50-75 mg/kg for infants and children
- Continue for more than 2 days after signs and symptoms of infection have disappeared
- Usual duration is 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Intramuscular or intravenous injection
- Administration over 2-4 minutes
- Various concentrations for reconstituted solution
- Patient tolerance test recommended before treatment
- Potency maintained for at least 6 hours at room temperature or 24 hours at 5°C
