Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
- High degree of stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of about 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Excreted unchanged in the urine
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Usual dose for adults: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Usual dose for infants and children: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum pediatric dose: 4 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days

Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia
- Hepatic reactions including elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia
- CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, headache
- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not established
- Cautious use during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Potential for anaphylactic shock
- Incidence of gallbladder sludge
- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not to be given to neonates if premature or newborn (up to 28 days of age)
