Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity
  • Potent activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Relatively long plasma elimination half-life (6-9 hours)
  • Non-metabolized in the body
  • Excretion through urine and bile
  • Highly protein bound (95%)

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day or twice a day
  • Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
  • Infants and children dosage: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day or twice a day
  • Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days

Administration

  • Preparation of solutions for intramuscular and intravenous injections
  • Injection administered over 2-4 minutes or by tubing infusion over 30 minutes
  • Patient tolerance test recommended before treatment
  • Freshly reconstituted solution recommended

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Gallbladder condition reversible on discontinuation or completion of therapy
  • Regular blood picture check during prolonged treatment

Use in Special Populations

  • Avoid use in premature and newborn neonates (up to 28 days of age)

Overdose Effects

  • No specific antidote
  • Symptomatic treatment advised
