Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity
- Potent activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life (6-9 hours)
- Non-metabolized in the body
- Excretion through urine and bile
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day or twice a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Infants and children dosage: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day or twice a day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Preparation of solutions for intramuscular and intravenous injections
- Injection administered over 2-4 minutes or by tubing infusion over 30 minutes
- Patient tolerance test recommended before treatment
- Freshly reconstituted solution recommended
