Indications

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Potent bactericidal activity
  • Interference with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High degree of stability in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Long plasma elimination half-life
  • Not metabolized in the body
  • Excretion in urine and bile/feces
  • Highly protein bound

Dosage

  • Usual adult dose of 1-2 gm intravenously or intramuscular once a day
  • Maximum adult dose of 4 gm/day
  • Infant and children dose of 50-75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular once a day
  • Maximum infant and children dose of 2 gm/day
  • Duration of therapy of more than 2 days after signs and symptoms of infection have disappeared

Administration

  • Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
  • Injection administered over 2-4 minutes
  • Administration of a test dose before starting treatment
  • Potency maintained for at least 6 hours at room temperature or 24 hours at 5°C

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Use in Special Populations

  • Not for use in neonates if premature or newborn (up to 28 days of age)
