Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Interference with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High degree of stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life
- Not metabolized in the body
- Excretion in urine and bile/feces
- Highly protein bound
Dosage
- Usual adult dose of 1-2 gm intravenously or intramuscular once a day
- Maximum adult dose of 4 gm/day
- Infant and children dose of 50-75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular once a day
- Maximum infant and children dose of 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy of more than 2 days after signs and symptoms of infection have disappeared
Administration
- Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
- Injection administered over 2-4 minutes
- Administration of a test dose before starting treatment
- Potency maintained for at least 6 hours at room temperature or 24 hours at 5°C

- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
