Description
- Combination medication for essential hypertension
- Contains dihydropyridine calcium antagonist (Amlodipine) and cardioselective beta-blocker (Atenolol)
- Recommended dosage of 5/25 mg tablet once daily
- Potential use post myocardial infarction (MI)
- Indicated for refractory angina pectoris when nitrate therapy has failed
- Storage conditions: Below 30°C, away from light and moisture
- Contraindicated in sinus bradycardia, heart block, cardiogenic shock, hypotension, congestive heart failure
- Potential side effects: fatigue, headache, edema, nausea, drowsiness, anxiety, depression
- Usage precautions for patients with airway obstruction, renal impairment, and hepatic impairment
Dosage
- Recommended dosage: 5/25 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage may be individualized
- Dosage may be increased to 5/25 mg two tablets daily as advised by physicians
Interaction
- Interaction with disopyramide: Atenolol reduces disopyramide clearance by 20%
- Interaction with ampicillin: May reduce Atenolol levels at doses of 1 gm and above
- Interaction with oral antidiabetics and insulin: Beta-blockers may decrease tissue sensitivity to insulin and inhibit insulin secretion
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to either component
- Contraindicated in poor left ventricular function
- Not to be used in pregnancy and lactation, unless the expected benefit outweighs potential fetal risk
Side Effects
- Well-tolerated combination with side-effects including fatigue, headache, edema, nausea, drowsiness, anxiety, depression
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if expected benefit outweighs potential fetal risk
- Should not be used by nursing mothers, if necessary, breastfeeding should be stopped
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with airway obstruction
- Can be used in patients with renal impairment, caution if creatinine clearance is less than 30 ml/min
- Caution necessary in severe liver damage due to prolongation of Amlodipine elimination half-life
- Patients should be warned against abrupt discontinuation
Overdose Effects
- Hypotension and less frequently congestive cardiac failure may occur
- Unabsorbed drugs may be removed by gastric lavage or administration of activated charcoal
- Symptomatic treatment is suggested
