Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
- High degree of stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life of about 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Excreted unchanged in the urine
Dosage
- Usual adult dose: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Usual pediatric dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
- Freshly reconstituted solution is recommended
- Patient tolerance test by administration of a test dose

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia
- Hepatic reactions including elevations of SGOT or SGPT
- CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances
- Local phlebitis occurs rarely following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Anaphylactic shock may occur
- Gallbladder sludge may be detected
- Blood picture should be checked during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for premature and newborn neonates
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote
- Treatment should be symptomatic
