Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
  • High degree of stability in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Relatively long plasma elimination half-life of about 6 to 9 hours
  • Not metabolized in the body
  • Excreted unchanged in the urine

Dosage

  • Usual adult dose: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
  • Usual pediatric dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
  • Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days

Administration

  • Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
  • Freshly reconstituted solution is recommended
  • Patient tolerance test by administration of a test dose

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria
  • Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia
  • Hepatic reactions including elevations of SGOT or SGPT
  • CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances
  • Local phlebitis occurs rarely following intravenous administration

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety not established in human pregnancy
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Anaphylactic shock may occur
  • Gallbladder sludge may be detected
  • Blood picture should be checked during prolonged treatment

Use in Special Populations

  • Not recommended for premature and newborn neonates

Overdose Effects

  • No specific antidote
  • Treatment should be symptomatic
