Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Long plasma elimination half-life
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound
- Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
- Excreted in urine and feces
Dosage
- 1 to 2 gm IV or IM once a day for adults
- 250 mg IM as a single dose for uncomplicated gonococcal infections
- 1 g IV as a single dose for surgical prophylaxis
- 50 to 75 mg/kg IV or IM once a day for infants and children
- Continued for more than 2 days after signs and symptoms disappear
- Duration of therapy usually 4 to 14 days or longer for complicated infections
Administration
- Intramuscular or intravenous injection
- Preparation of solutions for injections
- Administered over 2-4 minutes for IM or IV injection or by tubing infusion over 30 minutes
- Freshly reconstituted solution is recommended
- Patient tolerance test before starting treatment
