Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Approximately 40-65% excreted unchanged in urine
Dosage
- Usual adult dose: 1 to 2 gm by IV or IM once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Usual pediatric dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg by IV or IM once a day
- Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days or more in complicated infections
Administration
- Requires intramuscular or intravenous injection
- Preparation of solutions for injections
- Injection administered over 2-4 minutes or by tubing infusion over 30 minutes
- Patient tolerance test recommended before treatment

- No reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Not to be given to patients with history of hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
- Rare occurrence of local phlebitis
Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Anaphylactic shock as with other cephalosporins
- Need for immediate countermeasures in case of anaphylactic shock
- Monitoring blood picture during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not to be given to neonates if premature or up to 28 days old
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote
- Treatment should be symptomatic
