Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity
  • Potent against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Long plasma elimination half-life (6 to 9 hours)
  • Not metabolized in the body
  • Highly protein bound (95%)

Dosage

  • Usual dose for adults: 1 to 2 gm by IV or IM once a day
  • Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
  • Usual dose for infants and children: 50 to 75 mg/kg by IV or IM once a day
  • Maximum pediatric dose: 4 gm/day
  • Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days

Administration

  • Intramuscular or intravenous administration
  • Injection preparation for IM/IV injections
  • Administered over 2-4 minutes
  • Tubing infusion over 30 minutes
  • Patient tolerance test recommended
