Description

Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media

- Bacterial Septicemia

- Prevention of postoperative infections
- Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery
Pharmacology
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6-9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Excreted mainly in urine and bile
Dosage
- Adult dose: 1-2 gm once a day intravenously or intramuscularly
- Maximum daily dose: 4 gm
- Pediatric dose: 50-75 mg/kg once a day
- Duration of therapy: 4-14 days
Administration
- Preparation for intramuscular and intravenous injections
- Injected over 2-4 minutes or infused over 30 minutes
- Freshly reconstituted solution recommended
- Tolerance test advised before starting treatment

- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Avoid in premature and newborn neonates up to 28 days old
