Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Potent bactericidal activity
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Relatively long plasma elimination half-life (6 to 9 hours)

Dosage

  • Usual dose for adults: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
  • Uncomplicated gonococcal infections: 250 mg IM as a single dose
  • Surgical prophylaxis: 1 g IV as a single dose 30 to 120 minutes before surgery
  • Usual dose for infants and children (01 month or older): 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
  • Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days

Administration

  • Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
  • Can be dissolved in Lidocaine HCI 1% injection or Water for injection
  • Administered over 2-4 minutes or by tubing infusion over a period of 30 minutes
  • Patient tolerance test should be checked by administration of a test dose

  • No reported drug interactions

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • CNS reactions
  • Local phlebitis following intravenous administration

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Should not be used in pregnancy unless absolutely indicated
  • Caution in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Potential for anaphylactic shock
  • Shadows suggesting sludge in the gallbladder detected in rare cases
  • Blood picture should be checked at regular intervals during prolonged treatment

Use in Special Populations

  • Must not be given to neonates if premature and newborn (up to 28 days of age)

Overdose Effects

  • No specific antidote
  • Treatment should be symptomatic
