Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life (6 to 9 hours)
Dosage
- Usual dose for adults: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Uncomplicated gonococcal infections: 250 mg IM as a single dose
- Surgical prophylaxis: 1 g IV as a single dose 30 to 120 minutes before surgery
- Usual dose for infants and children (01 month or older): 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
- Can be dissolved in Lidocaine HCI 1% injection or Water for injection
- Administered over 2-4 minutes or by tubing infusion over a period of 30 minutes
- Patient tolerance test should be checked by administration of a test dose

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should not be used in pregnancy unless absolutely indicated

Precautions & Warnings
- Potential for anaphylactic shock
- Shadows suggesting sludge in the gallbladder detected in rare cases
- Blood picture should be checked at regular intervals during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Must not be given to neonates if premature and newborn (up to 28 days of age)
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote
- Treatment should be symptomatic
