Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life (6 to 9 hours)
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
- Excreted in urine and bile/feces
- Potent against a wide range of bacteria
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 1 to 2 gm intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Uncomplicated gonococcal infections: 250 mg intramuscular as a single dose
- Surgical prophylaxis: 1 g intravenous as a single dose
- Pediatric dosage: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
Administration
- Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
- Administration over 2-4 minutes
- Tubing infusion over a period of 30 minutes
- Patient tolerance test recommended
- Freshly reconstituted solution recommended

Contraindications
- Patients with history of hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
