Indications

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Long plasma elimination half-life (6 to 9 hours)
  • Not metabolized in the body
  • Highly protein bound (95%)
  • Excreted in urine and bile/feces
  • Potent against a wide range of bacteria

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 1 to 2 gm intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Uncomplicated gonococcal infections: 250 mg intramuscular as a single dose
  • Surgical prophylaxis: 1 g intravenous as a single dose
  • Pediatric dosage: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day

Administration

  • Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
  • Administration over 2-4 minutes
  • Tubing infusion over a period of 30 minutes
  • Patient tolerance test recommended
  • Freshly reconstituted solution recommended

Contraindications

  • Patients with history of hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
