Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against a wide range of organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Usual adult dose: 1-2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Infants and children dose: 50-75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum dose for children: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4-14 days
Administration
- Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
- Administration over 2-4 minutes
- Tolerance test before treatment
- Maintains potency for at least 6 hours at room temperature

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia
- Hepatic reactions including elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia
- CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances
- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Caution in lactating mothers

- Potential gallbladder-related shadows
- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
