Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity
  • Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in presence of beta lactamases
  • Long plasma elimination half-life (6-9 hours)
  • Not metabolized in the body
  • Excreted unchanged in urine and bile
  • Highly protein bound (95%)

Dosage

  • Usual dose for adults: 1 to 2 gm intravenously or intramuscularly once a day
  • Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
  • Usual dose for infants and children: 50 to 75 mg/kg once a day
  • Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
  • Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days

Administration

  • Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
  • Administration over 2-4 minutes
  • Patient tolerance test recommended
  • Potency maintained for at least 6 hours at room temperature

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Monitoring blood picture during prolonged treatment
  • Reversible shadows suggesting sludge in gallbladder
  • Caution with premature neonates

Use in Special Populations

  • Avoid use in premature and newborn neonates (up to 28 days of age)

Overdose Effects

  • No specific antidote
  • Symptomatic treatment recommended
