Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Adult dose: 1-2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Pediatric dose: 50-75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Duration of therapy: 4-14 days
Administration
- Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
- Injection should be administered over 2-4 minutes
- Test dose for patient tolerance
- Solution potency maintained for at least 6 hours at room temperature

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting)
- Cutaneous reactions (rash, pruritus, urticaria)
- Hematologic reactions (eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia)
- Hepatic reactions (elevations of SGOT or SGPT)
- CNS reactions (nervousness, confusion, headache)
- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy lactation
- Not established safety in human pregnancy
- Caution when administered to lactating mother
Precautions warnings
- Risk of anaphylactic shock
- Possible gallbladder sludge with prolonged use
- Regular blood picture checking during prolonged treatment
Special populations
- Avoid in premature and newborn neonates

- No specific antidote, symptomatic treatment
