Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
  • Not metabolized in the body
  • Highly protein bound (95%)

Dosage

  • Adult dose: 1-2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
  • Pediatric dose: 50-75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Duration of therapy: 4-14 days

Administration

  • Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
  • Injection should be administered over 2-4 minutes
  • Test dose for patient tolerance
  • Solution potency maintained for at least 6 hours at room temperature

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side effects

  • Gastro-intestinal effects (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting)
  • Cutaneous reactions (rash, pruritus, urticaria)
  • Hematologic reactions (eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia)
  • Hepatic reactions (elevations of SGOT or SGPT)
  • CNS reactions (nervousness, confusion, headache)
  • Local phlebitis following intravenous administration

Pregnancy lactation

  • Not established safety in human pregnancy
  • Caution when administered to lactating mother

Precautions warnings

  • Risk of anaphylactic shock
  • Possible gallbladder sludge with prolonged use
  • Regular blood picture checking during prolonged treatment

Special populations

  • Avoid in premature and newborn neonates

Overdose effects

  • No specific antidote, symptomatic treatment
