Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life of about 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Usual adult dose of 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum dose: 4 gm/day
- Usual infant and children dose of 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum infant dose: 2 gm/day

Contraindications
Should not be given to patients with a history of hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not established

- Anaphylactic shock management
- Rare occurrence of shadows suggesting sludge in the gallbladder
- Blood picture should be checked during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
Must not be given to premature and newborn neonates (up to 28 days of age)
Overdose Effects
No specific antidote, treatment should be symptomatic
