Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Interference with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Long plasma elimination half-life of about 6 to 9 hours
  • Excretion in urine and feces
  • High protein binding

Dosage

  • Usual adult dose: 1 to 2 gm intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Usual pediatric dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
  • Specific doses for different infections and patient groups
  • Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days, longer for complicated infections

Administration

  • Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
  • Use of Lidocaine HCI 1% injection for intramuscular injection
  • Use of Water for injection USP for intravenous injection
  • Recommended administration time and concentration

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • No specific antidote. Symptomatic treatment
