Description
- Tribac is indicated for the treatment of various infections like Lower respiratory tract infections, Acute Bacterial Otitis Media, Skin and skin structure infections, Urinary tract infections, Gonorrhea, Bacterial Septicemia, Bone and joint infections, Meningitis, and Prevention of postoperative infections.
- It has potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
- Usual adult dose: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day (or in equally divided doses twice a day); Maximum dose: 4 gm/day. Usual pediatric dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day (or in equally divided doses twice a day); Maximum dose: 2 gm/day.
- It should be prepared for injection using Lidocaine HCI 1% or Water for injection. Administered over 2-4 minutes for intramuscular or intravenous injection, or over 30 minutes for tubing infusion at concentration between 10 mg/mL and 40 mg/mL.

Mode of Action
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High degree of stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life (6 to 9 hours)
- Not metabolized in the body
- Excreted unchanged in the urine (40-65%)
Dosage
- Usual adult dose: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum dose: 4 gm/day
- Usual pediatric dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days or longer in complicated infections
Administration
- Preparation for intramuscular injection using Lidocaine HCI 1% solution
- Preparation for intravenous injection using Water for injection
- Should be administered over 2-4 minutes for intramuscular or intravenous injection, or over 30 minutes for tubing infusion

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting)
- Cutaneous reactions (rash, pruritus, urticaria)
- Hematologic reactions (eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia)
- Hepatic reactions (elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia)
- CNS reactions (nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances)
- Local phlebitis (rare)
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Excreted in human milk (caution in lactating mothers)
Precautions & Warnings
- Anaphylactic shock may occur
- Possibility of gallbladder sludge
- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for neonates if premature or newborn (up to 28 days of age)
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote
- Treatment should be symptomatic
