Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Adult:
- 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum dose: 4 gm/day
- Infants and Children (01 month or older):
- 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days; longer therapy may be required in complicated infections

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
- Rash, pruritus, urticaria, and edema
- Eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, anemia
- Elevations of liver enzymes
- CNS reactions including nervousness and headache
- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety not established in pregnancy; caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Potential for anaphylactic shock
- Rare cases of gallbladder sludge
- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
Not for premature newborns (up to 28 days of age)
Overdose Effects
No specific antidote; treatment should be symptomatic
