Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life of about 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- About 40-65% excreted unchanged in the urine
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Usual adult dose: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum dose for adults: 4 gm/day
- Usual pediatric dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- For Intramuscular Injection: 250 mg or 500 mg Ceftriaxone dissolved in lidocaine HCI 1% injection
- For Intravenous Injection: 250 mg or 500 mg Ceftriaxone dissolved in water for injection

- No reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia
- Hepatic reactions including elevations of liver enzymes
- CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, headache
- Local phlebitis occurs rarely following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not established
- Low concentrations in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Anaphylactic shock
- Shadows suggesting sludge in the gallbladder detected
- Blood picture should be checked during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Must not be given to neonates if premature or newborn (up to 28 days of age)
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote
- Treatment should be symptomatic
