Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life (6 to 9 hours)
- Not metabolized in the body
- High degree of protein binding (95%)
- Excretion in urine and bile
Dosage
- Usual dose for adults (1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day)
- Dosing based on infection type
- Specific doses for uncomplicated gonococcal infections and surgical prophylaxis
- Usual dose for infants and children (50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day)

Contraindications
- Not to be given to patients with a history of hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Hematologic reactions (eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, etc.)
- Hepatic reactions (elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia)
- CNS reactions (nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances, etc)
- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not established
- Caution advised when administered to lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Potential for anaphylactic shock
- Rare cases of gallbladder shadows detected
- Recommend blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Must not be given to neonates if premature and newborn (up to 28 days of age)
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote
- Treatment should be symptomatic
