Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Not metabolized in the body
- Excreted in urine and bile
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Usual dose of 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day
- Different doses for various infections and age groups
Administration
- Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
- Intramuscular injection requires Lidocaine HCI 1% injection
- Intravenous injection requires Water for Injection USP
- Injection administered over 2-4 minutes or by tubing infusion over 30 minutes
- Patient tolerance test recommended before starting treatment

Contraindications
- Not to be given to patients with hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Common side effects include gastro-intestinal effects, cutaneous reactions, hematologic reactions, hepatic reactions, CNS reactions
- Local phlebitis rare following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not established
- Caution advised during lactation due to excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Anaphylactic shock possible
- Gallbladder sludge detected in rare cases
- Blood picture should be checked during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for neonates if premature or newborn (up to 28 days of age)
