Indications

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections

  • Bacterial Septicemia
  • Bone and joint infections

  • Prevention of postoperative infections
  • Perioperative prophylaxis of infections associated with surgery

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Potent bactericidal activity
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stable in the presence of beta lactamases
  • Long plasma elimination half-life
  • Highly protein bound (95%)
  • Metabolized in urine and bile
  • Not metabolized in the body

Dosage

  • Usual dose for adults: 1-2 gm by IV or IM once a day
  • Dosage for various infections and conditions
  • Maximum dose for adults: 4 gm/day
  • Usual dose for infants and children: 50-75 mg/kg IV or IM once a day
  • Maximum dose for infants and children: 2 gm/day
  • Duration of therapy: 4-14 days

Administration

  • Preparation of solutions for intramuscular / intravenous injections
  • Use of Lidocaine HCI 1% injection for intramuscular injection
  • Use of Water for injection for intravenous injection
  • Recommended injection administration periods and concentrations
  • Patient tolerance test before treatment
  • Solution stability at different temperatures

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Well tolerated but may cause gastrointestinal effects
  • May cause cutaneous reactions and hematologic reactions
  • Rare occurrence of local phlebitis following intravenous administration

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety in human pregnancy not established
  • Caution in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Potential for anaphylactic shock
  • Rare occurrence of gallbladder sludge
  • Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment

Use in Special Populations

  • Not recommended for neonates if premature
