Indications

  • Treatment of moderate to severe pneumonia
  • Empiric treatment of febrile neutropenic patients
  • Treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
  • Treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections
  • Bactericidal mode of action
  • Disruption of peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls
  • Compatible with intravenous administration
  • Excreted in human breast milk in low concentrations
  • Use in pediatric patients
  • Use in geriatric patients
  • Use in patients with impaired hepatic function

Dosage & Administration

  • Intravenous administration over approximately 30 minutes
  • Specific dosages for different types of infections

  • Maximum pediatric dose should not exceed recommended adult dose

Interaction

  • Monitoring of renal function when administering with aminoglycosides
  • Nephrotoxicity with concomitant administration of cephalosporins and potent diuretics

Contraindications

  • Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or cephalosporin class
  • Contraindicated in patients with penicillin allergy
  • Contraindicated in patients with beta-lactam antibiotic allergy

  • Pregnancy category B
  • Caution in use during pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid prescribing in absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection
  • Monitoring for overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms
  • Prothrombin time monitoring in at-risk patients
  • Caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
  • Arginine may alter glucose metabolism and elevate serum potassium

Use in Special Populations

  • Maximum dose for pediatric patients
  • Geriatric patients with renal insufficiency at risk of serious adverse events
  • No dose adjustment necessary for impaired hepatic function
  • Dose adjustment for impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Careful observation and supportive treatment
  • Hemodialysis recommended in the presence of renal insufficiency
  • Symptoms include encephalopathy, myoclonus, seizures
