Indications
- Treatment of moderate to severe pneumonia
- Treatment of febrile neutropenia
- Treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Used in combination for complicated intra-abdominal infections
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal mode of action
- Disruption of peptidoglycan layer synthesis
- Same mode of action as other beta-lactam antibiotics
Dosage & Administration
- Administered intravenously over approximately 30 minutes
- Specific dosage for different infections like pneumonia, urinary tract infections
Interaction
- Monitor renal function carefully for high doses of aminoglycosides
- Nephrotoxicity potential with concomitant administration of other cephalosporins and potent diuretics
Contraindications
- Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or cephalosporin class of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Possible immediate hypersensitivity reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Excretion in human breast milk in very low concentrations
- Caution in administration to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid prescribing in absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms
- Associated with a fall in prothrombin activity
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Maximum dose for pediatric patients should not exceed recommended adult dose
- Serious adverse events in geriatric patients with renal insufficiency
- No adjustment necessary for patients with impaired hepatic function
- Adjust dose for patients with impaired renal function
Overdose Effects
- Careful observation and supportive treatment for patients who receive an overdose
- Recommend hemodialysis in the presence of renal insufficiency
