Indications

  • Pneumonia (moderate to severe)
  • Febrile Neutropenia
  • Uncomplicated and Complicated Urinary Tract Infections
  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections
  • Complicated Intra-abdominal Infections

Pharmacology

Cephalosporins are bactericidal and disrupt the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls.

Dosage & Administration

  • Administered intravenously over approximately 30 minutes
  • Dosage varies based on the type of infection and severity

Interaction

Monitor renal function when administering with aminoglycosides or diuretics.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or cephalosporin class antibiotics.

Side Effects

May cause hypersensitivity reactions in certain patients.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B. Excreted in human breast milk in very low concentrations.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prescribe only for proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms
  • Associated with a fall in prothrombin activity

Use in Special Populations

  • Pediatric Use: Dose should not exceed recommended adult dose
  • Geriatric Use: Serious adverse events reported in geriatric patients with renal insufficiency
  • Impaired Hepatic Function: No dose adjustment necessary
  • Impaired Renal Function: Dose adjustment required for patients with impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

Symptoms include encephalopathy, myoclonus, seizures, and neuromuscular excitability.
