Indications
- Treatment of moderate to severe pneumonia caused by specific microorganisms
- Empiric treatment for febrile neutropenic patients
- Treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections (in combination with metronidazole)
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action
- Disruption of peptidoglycan layer synthesis in bacterial cell walls
- Similar mode of action to other beta-lactam antibiotics
Dosage & Administration
- Administered intravenously over approximately 30 minutes
- Dosage varies based on the type and severity of the infection
Interaction
- Monitoring of renal function when administered with aminoglycosides
- Potential nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity with aminoglycoside antibiotics
- Nephrotoxicity risk with concomitant administration of other cephalosporins and potent diuretics
Contraindications
- Immediate hypersensitivity to cefepime or cephalosporin class of antibiotics
- Hypersensitivity to penicillin or other betalactum antibiotics

- Excretion in human breast milk in very low concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid prescribing in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection
- Potential overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms with prolonged use
- Association with a fall in prothrombin activity
- Caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
- Potential glucose metabolism alteration with arginine administration
Use in Special Populations
- Pediatric use up to 16 years with maximum dose restriction
- Geriatric use and risk of serious adverse events in renal insufficiency
- Renal function adjustment in impaired renal function patients

- Careful observation and supportive treatment for patients receiving overdose
