Indications
- Treatment of moderate to severe pneumonia
- Treatment of febrile neutropenia
- Treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action
- Disruption of peptidoglycan layer in bacterial cell walls
- Mode of action similar to other beta-lactam antibiotics
Dosage & Administration
- Intravenous administration over approximately 30 minutes
- Specific dosages for different infections
Interaction
- Monitoring renal function when administered with aminoglycosides
- Increased potential of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity with high doses of aminoglycosides
Contraindications
- Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or cephalosporin class of antibiotics
- Contraindicated in patients allergic to penicillin or other betalactum antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

- Excretion in human breast milk in very low concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribing only in the presence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection
- Risk of overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms with prolonged use
- Associated with a fall in prothrombin activity
- Caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Maximum dose for pediatric patients should not exceed recommended adult dose
- Serious adverse events in geriatric patients with renal insufficiency
- No adjustment necessary for patients with impaired hepatic function
- Dose adjustment in patients with impaired renal function
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms of overdose include encephalopathy, myoclonus, seizures
- Hemodialysis recommended in the presence of renal insufficiency
