Description

Indications

  • Treatment of moderate to severe pneumonia caused by specific microorganisms
  • Empiric treatment of febrile neutropenic patients
  • Treatment of complicated urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis
  • Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
  • Treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections (in combination with metronidazole)

Pharmacology

  • Cephalosporins are bactericidal
  • Disrupts the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls

Dosage & Administration

  • Specific dosages for different types of infections
  • IV administration recommended
  • Caution for patients with diminished renal or hepatic function

Interaction

  • Monitor renal function when administering high doses with aminoglycosides
  • Risk of nephrotoxicity with potent diuretics

Contraindications

  • Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or cephalosporin class of antibiotics
  • Contraindicated in patients allergic to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics

  • Excreted in low concentrations in human breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid prescribing in the absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection

  • Associated with a fall in prothrombin activity

Use in Special Populations

  • Maximum dose for pediatric patients should not exceed the recommended adult dose
  • Caution in geriatric patients with renal insufficiency
  • No dose adjustment for patients with impaired hepatic function
  • Dose adjustment for patients with impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Careful observation and supportive treatment for overdose patients
  • Hemodialysis recommended in the presence of renal insufficiency
